Round 2 tech inspection - REVISED JUNE 11

Just a few things to mention regarding tech inspection for ROUND 2.

As was announced at the rider's meeting in Round 1, we will be enforcing the new for 2010 "engine case cover" rule, in ROUND 2.

The rule reads as follows(per section 5.2 Equipment Standards - General):

Engine case covers must be suitably reinforced, or be of heavy duty type specifically intended for racing use. Alternate suitable protection for engine cases, such as frame mounted sliders, may be permitted (subject to suitability and at the discretion of the Chief Technical Inspector) where suitable aftermarket reinforcement or race specific covers are not commercially available.

In particular, please note that the use of "alternate suitable protection" for engine cases is only recommended for when commercially available race specific covers, or case guards are not available.

Some methods of "alternate" case protection that we saw in Round 1 included weld overlay, moulded cover protection, and JB weld.

Under no circumstances will JB weld or similar product applied to a stock cover be accepted.

Weld overlay and moulded cover protection will be acceptable on the condition that it is done in a manner that is deemed acceptable by tech (i.e. the likely contact point or points are well protected) Although we will be reasonable about this, we can not provide a blanket statement to guarantee that any kind of "home made" solution will be acceptable. Discretion will be applied on a case by case basis for bikes where covers are inherently protected, or protected by proper sliders.

This all sounds rather complicated, however to simplify: If proper race covers or aftermarket case guards are available for your bike, they are recommended. Alternately, you may reinforce your stock covers(done suitably) via weld overlay or moulded covers placed over your stock covers. If no proper race covers or aftermarket case guards are available and the engine covers are inherently protected or are adequately protected by frame sliders, this will be considered for acceptability by tech. The bottom line, and intent of the rule, is that every bike must present to tech in a way that is not deemed to be at elevated risk of oiling the track.

Regarding tech, approximately 2/3 of the bikes checked in Round 1 had one or more non-compliances. By far, the majority of non-compliances had to do with missing or improper safety wire or missing silicone on critical fasteners. There were also quite a few bikes that did not have metal valve caps on wheels and bikes that did not have a "sock" on the brake reservoir. These are all simple things that every racer can check before they bring their bike to tech, which will save time and effort for everyone on race day. We're expecting that non-compliances will be the exception and not the rule at Round 2....please thoroughly checkyour bike over before you bring it to tech.

Juan
